If you look for protection but not looks, then I can tell good things about repurposed DVD cases.
That is, find a DVD case where the Kobo fits in and remove all the parts that held the disc - the rest should be flat.
(No need to cut a circular hole into the backside, remove the middle section and parts of the surrounding ring, but leave enough for it to hold together.)

It doesn't look nice (especially after a year inside my jacket next to my keys), but so far it protected my eBook readers.
