You have no idea... trains require infrastructure as well and you can't exactly stick a high speed line to every front doorstep...
try looking at a map of the world sometime, a lot of the world has a relatively light occupation of areas which require individual transport... or perhaps you'd prefer to rollback to a peasant based economy with people tied to walking distance from where they live... hey, we can have the old Golden Age... where lives were hard, short and impoverished, as long as you don't have to live like that...
