This is how the vast majority of pumps works, in the States. Except there's an attendant who can turn on the pump if you prefer to use cash. But many, many now require you to pay in advance if you're paying with cash.
EDIT: But exactly none of them allow you to test drive a gallon of their gas and
then come back and pay for it later.
