See, this is what happens to a country where Disney and Sonny Bono don't bother to come in and help us rewrite all our copyright laws. We still have that nasty Death + 50 years thing happening here.
Actually, our IP laws used to be even slacker - consumers used to have to pay a tax on blank CDs and iPods, which was used to create a fund to compensate artists whose work may have been downloaded. The big "whoops!" came when the government first tried to take someone to court for file sharing and the ruling was "um, you can't charge them a tax for file sharing, and then prosecute them for file sharing."
