Trollope, Anthony: John Caldigate, v.1, 24 Feb 2008.

(1877)
This Trollope novel is barely, known, which is a pity because it is rather good. It is virtually a detective novel. The eponymous hero, a squire’s son, goes to Australia and sows his wild oats. On his return to England he marries a nice girl. Then his old Australian buddies turn up with an old flame of his, accusing him of bigamy. How can John Caldigate clear his name? An improbable saviour locates an unexpected forensic clue...

The novel features an array of strong-minded women: Mrs Caldigate (the real one) needs a feisty streak to cope with the bigamy allegations. Her mother is a strong-minded bigot. And the woman who hatches the conspiracy would have been a fascinating character had Trollope not chickened out of a detailed portrayal.
