Well, I will give you some pointers:

1) First ask this same question in the apple sub-forum there are a bunch of people over there that know a lot more about apple devices then most of us do;
2) Second, not trying to disparage your ipad but ipad owners have told me that its sort of ackward as a reader and rather expensive to be used as that on a regualr basis;
3) Third, look at the formats that your device can read and when you go shopping for books make sure that you limit your search to electronic stores that sell one of those formats;
4) Fourth, Amazon is out for you, they will not sell open standard books;
5) I would also recommend looking for an apple forum on the information superhighway, people at that sort of forum will be better equipped to handle the ins and outs of an ipad, the dominant devices here tend to be: Kindle, Nook Color and Sony PRS; I personally have two - a Libra Pro and a Blackberry Storm and I have no experience with apple and their products.
