I think a key to typing on the iPhone is to just blast away! People don't realize that you don't have to exactly hit the letter you want. You just have to be close (the next key laterally or vertically is close enough) and 99 percent of the time the iPhone will deduce what you were trying to type. Many times it doesn't show you the word you typing until the last letter or two.
Example:
The word "concentrate": don't worry about hitting each letter correctly just blast away. You may end up actually typing "xpmvbrrsrw", but OSX quickly determines that you had to be typing "concentrate", the one small problem is that sometimes it wont be able to "guess" until the last letter or so and your brain is telling you otherwise.
Trust the system and you will more oft than not get the word you are trying to type. Once I did that... my typing speed increased immensely. I am somewhat surprised that Apple doesn't incorporate that into its desktop OS as well.
