I'd look for somewhere that's away from the most obvious natural disasters. Eg, much as I love the San Francisco Bay area, it's not somewhere I'd want to live - the "big one" is coming sooner or later. Nor would I choose to live in a place that's subject to hurricanes, such as Florida.

My favourite part of the US is Washington (state); I worked near Seattle for a while, and enjoyed it very much. One has both the sea and the mountains within easy reach. It also has four "real" seasons, something which for me is essential; I think I'd feel as though I was stuck in some kind of time warp with just sunshine day after day. Nothing beats a beautiful spring day, or going for a good walk of a cold, crisp winter's day.
