Hover mowers became popular in the UK in the late 1970s and 1980s with the brand "Flymo". UK lawns are mostly quite small, don't forget, so corded electric mowers are quite practical.
Qualcast (one of the main manufacturers before Flymo launched) fought back with the slogan "It's a lot less bovver than a hover". There was a bit of fuss about this:
