OK, so let's see if I understand.
You do not have access to a wifi connection, correct?
The only way for you to download newsfeeds is by connecting to 3G, but you would prefer to not pay for the "personal document" download service, correct?
Sending files to @free.kindle.com will allow you to avoid paying any fees, but then you end up back at the no wifi problem, correct?
I see three options for downloading newsfeeds while on the go:
A. Find a coffee shop or library or whatever that has free public wifi and do your downloading there.
B. Pay the fee for 3G downloading "personal documents"
C. Use the Kindle's browser and 3G connection to access an online newsfeed reader such as Google Reader (you can get to a kindle friendly version by going to m.google.com).
If on-the-go downloads are not important, then you also have the option of transferring files from your computer to your Kindle via the USB cable.
