Manga is published in a much wider variety of categories than comics in the US. Major categories include Shōnen (target audience younger males, largely action driven), Shōjo (target audience younger females, largely character or romance driven), Senin (target adult males, possibly sexual content, or possibly just topics that would be boring to younger males), and Josei (target adult females, ditto.)

Yaoi is actually read largely by heterosexual females in Japan. There is also Yuri manga.
