I was confused by the whole "friend" part of it then, which further complicates the issue. Are you converting the pBook to an eBook yourself?

If you are converting it yourself, then there is no requirement in US copyright law that says you have to destroy the pBook in order to make your own eBook. It's just a side effect because the most practical/easiest way to do so right now involves effectively destroying the book. If you could make an eBook copy from your own pBook without harming the pBook, there would be nothing illegal about it.

If you are not converting it yourself, but obtaining a copy of the eBook from your friend, then according to copyright law your friend is not an authorized distributor, so regardless of whether or not you destroy your pBook, it is still illegal for them to give you a copy of the eBook.

In either case, destroying the pBook doesn't really make a difference as far as what is "right" vs "wrong".
