Mercedes Lackey & Larry Dixon's "the SERRAted edge" series

Elizabeth Moon's "Sheepfarmer's Daughter" (first of a trilogy)

And a series I especially enjoyed, David Weber's "Bahzell" series (the first book, Oath of Swords, is available in the free library)
