I did find that my PRS-600 (when I had it) drained the battery roughly twice as fast as my PRS-505 (which I still have), even when supposedly turned off.
As a recent Nook Color owner, I concur with everything you've said.
My NC is for entertainment - turned into an Android tablet, it's great for games and video. But my Sony is for reading.
(Except for a few Google Books which aren't compatible. The Google Book app finally gives me access to those, and I have no complaints.)
