The WMA Overdrive books at FLP say they are compatible with an iPod, so shouldn't I be able to download them on it?

If they are Apple-compatible, you will have to download the file and convert it using iTunes and the Overdrive Media Console. Once you have the file, you can access the help menu for instructions. It's not hard, just takes a while.
If the audiobooks are already in mp3 format, you can use the Overdrive app to download them directly to your iWhatever, which if you are browsing with it, will only show those items anyway.
