The kindle can display PDF files and does keep the formatting the same.
That usually means that the page is squeezed to fit the screen, or you have to pan around the page. Some PDF files have small enough pages that this works out. The 9.7" Kindle DX is more likely to do a better job of this than the 6" Kindles.
