Thinking back on old bookcases I've had, after moving out of my parent's house that is. They had 'real' bookcases. I moved around a lot so had many different situations.

Bricks and boards in my hippy days,
as well as small wooden barrels (15-20gal?) and boards
Steel shelving
Wooden shelves with railroad tie uprights
Various sizes of orange crates
Open lattice of lath, with good engineering
Finally real book cases...

Now I've gotten rid of most of my paper books, and all that remain can fit into one narrow free-standing bookcase in the front room. But I have thousands of books on my hard drive waiting to go into my Sony.
