I sort of found a solution to the problem by setting the page size to 130mm x 188mm and then fooling the DX by drawing a 0.25pt border around the edge of the page. That forces the DX to draw the border and thus it can't crop the left whitespace margin.
For a device whose sole realistic attraction at it's price point is eInk PDF handling, though, I am astonished at the unbelievably poor PDF support in this device. Given that, I'll likely just return it and wait for the iPad 3, which will hopefully have a higher resolution display.
