I'm very saddened to learn this news... had been hoping against hope that Russ would somehow best the chronic fatigue syndrome that plagued her in later years, and write a few more gems.
It's hard to find her work nowadays, and only
The Female Man (one of her earliest books) is available as an ebook, but by God could she write. She won the 1972 Nebula for "When It Changed" (a short-story version of
Man), the 1983 Hugo for "Souls" (one of my favourite Russ stories), and created a memorable feminist sword-and sorcery heroine named
Alyx whom I absolutely loved. That doesn't even begin to touch on her non-SF fiction (e.g.
On Strike Against God), literary criticism (
How to Suppress Women's Writing), and her numerous articles, short stories, analytical pieces--all of which combined passion and wit.
Rest in peace, Joanna. I'm truly grateful for everything you gave us.
