"The Vampire Lestat" by Anne Rice. I'd enjoyed "Interview With the Vampire" and had read it several times, also seeing the film, so it seemed natural to read the sequel. But it was so heavily macabre that I couldn't get past the first 100 pages. Too dark and bloody. And I was a goth!
