You are right, any tag works. But it seems that it requires some version of ID3 tag -- I am not a expert here. All my audio books had id3 tag and they were not recognized by kindle until I did some arbitrary modifications in the tag.
Oh, BTW, I just used the built-in tagging function of windows xp and it worked.
