Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. I found the abduction and sexual abuse of the boy in the beginning to be more than I was willing to tolerate.

Unbroken:by Laura Hillenbrand was rough but at least the abuse was of military men.

I added John Pilger's "Heroes" and The Long Walk by Richard Bachman to my TBR list. :-)
