Hmmm. Are you familiar with The Book of Mormon, by any chance? You'll see where the original BSG lifted some ideas... (IIRC, the show's creators were Mormons.)

Agreed on Firefly, but not on Brust.

However, _The Phoenix Guards_ and _500 Years After_ are pastiches of Dumas.

I read _The Phoenix Guards_, and a friend who was a Brust fan asked how I liked it. I complained the the protagonists were idiots. "Of course they are!", he said. "Dumas' characters were idiots, too!" I thought about it and realized he was right. Brust's characters were young, with good tailoring, exquisite manners, and sharp swords in whose use they were expert. What need had they for brains?
