It is the case that every Kindle (and Kindle app) ever shipped has supported the DRM variation needed for library borrowing (essentially it is the same as Mobipocket DRM). As many posts here on Mobileread will attest.
The technical issues have always been on the server side, not the client side. Kindle platform still needs a device ID to apply DRM, but it is not exposed to the user as it is with Mobipocket platform. Therefore, before you can download an ebook 'from the library' (really it will be from an Amazon server somewhere), you will need to login with your Amazon credentials, and select the device you want to prepare ebook bits for, with wireless delivery included if desired. Neither your library or Overdrive has information about your Amazon account or Kindle devices, and you would not want them to have it.
My conclusion is that there won't be any firmware updates needed. They have been planning for this since the very beginning of Kindle.
