My mother's pug mix -- Sammy dog -- has a terrible thunderstorm phobia that has gotten worse as he's gotten older. Last night I dosed him with Benadryl before the storms approached, and it worked pretty well. He had some moderate trembling and panting in the worst part of the storm, but during the whole evening when it was approaching he snoozed beside me on the couch. Lately he's been in full-fledged panic with panting and drooling and heavy shudders when the storms are coming, and will do that for hours. The Benadryl definitely seemed to help and he suffered no ill effects from it.
