You got the place: the Mississippi
And close enough on the vessel - a paddle wheel steamer, the Sultana in 1865 - three of its four steam boilers exploded and the vessel sank. Not only did 1800 passengers die, but most were Union soldiers just released from Confederate prisoner of war camps trying to get home. The Sultana was legally rated to carry only 376 passengers, but was carrying an estimated 2400 at the time of the tragedy.
The tragedy was overlooked by most news coverage, as it happened just after the assassination of President Lincoln.
