I've been reading
Under the Ivy recently, and by doing a little looking on the 'net I learned that Kate Bush is releasing a new album next month titled
Director's Cut. The first single, "Deeper Understanding," was released on her website and YouTube this week.
The song might seem to make a pretty obvious point these days, but these words were first heard in 1989. For the album, Bush is doing something no one would have expected: revisiting older material. She's completely reworked 11 songs from
The Sensual World and
The Red Shoes.
Having finished
Under the Ivy, I can make a reasonable guess about why she chose those two. It was the lowest point in her life personally, so she probably felt there were some good songs on those albums that didn't get the care they deserved. Graeme Thomson, who wrote the book, seems to
feel the same.
Bush also says she's finishing up an album of brand new music soon, though "soon" for her might require a grain of salt. I'm looking forward to both.
