Thank you for your prompt reply. You may be assuming I know more than I do about iPod. We have a bog standard iPod with a load of wifey's music on it - good for travelling. But I don't know how to upload an ereader app (or any app for that matter) to the little device. We're away from home where there's an iMac and here in Tokyo using an Ubuntu laptop with an ethernet connection to the internet. We don't have a wifi account for the iPod in Tokyo. Am I still missing the point? Download Stanza ereader app to my laptop, then what?
