IMO, the NYT bestsellers list, is like a ruler. You keep in line with it, and you're supposed to be really well-read, I guess. But if I browse a book, or read a synopsis and I like it, I'll read it. Or if I look at a list recommended by other people who read science fiction fantasy or other genres that I read, THEN I take a look.
