There really isn't much that you actually need to use iTunes for with an iPad. I haven't connected mine to a PC in at least a month. Videos, books and comics are the main media I use with it, and I can load them all wirelessly. For my iTouch, iTunes is a requirement, for the iPad I don't find it to be one.
