There is also the old saying, "you get what you pay for." If via an offer such as at Smashwords you get a book for free I think that things come out about equal. While an author should strive to avoid errors in their writing if it doesn't cost the reader anything to get a copy the writer might also have the mentality that the errors don't matter. You see it happen in Fan Fictions often enough certainly. I remember reading one where the words looked more like IM language than English. i.e. b4 for before etc. I don't think I ever did finish reading that one.
