They went from a socket chip to a different soldered chip.

You have to go with the replacement. If the old unit breaks, you will be stuck with a new purchase and the out of pocket costs anyway. If you replace under warranty, you have a small chance that they will replace with an older version.

This is the main reason I bought my Jetbooks. When my Nook dies I will not buy another. They are worthless, for me, without the rooted library.
