Buying 2nd hand Nook

I have the opportunity to buy a 2nd hand nook at a very reasonable price. But I am based in New Zealand and we have no B&N presence here. I have read lots about the problems people experience with setting up nooks from outside the US and I'm not sure whether I should take a risk. My questions are:

- can I use the device without authorising it/linking it to an account at B&N?
- can I solely use it to sideload books via calibre and/or ADE? (I would have to authorise it via ADE of course and happy to do this).

I have asked the seller but they have no clues (its on a auction site) which may possibly be their reason for selling (it is only 6 months old)

Thanks all and Happy Easter from downunder
