Chances are when you have an issue like hyphens in the middle of words that the source for the conversion is PDF. And I've seen other errors due to PDF sourced eBooks. The first three eBooks in the Sookie Stackhouse series all had a problem with italics and all were PDF sourced.

I don't think it was implied that you did not buy the Lord of the Rings 3-in-1. It was more of his versions (the 1-in-1) did not have the errors. I double checked and the 3-in-1 has the errors you listed and the 1-in-1 does not.
