Here's what I think about latches. I much prefer a magnetic snap closure, with it closing on the front of the cover. I have one cover that snaps around to the back, and it just seems backwards to me. I have two M-Edge covers which have no closure system at all, so I bought some girl's very thin headbands, cut them down, and I use that. I slip the headband around the back of the cover, install my Kindle, then I can stretch the headband around to the front to hold it closed in my purse or whatever, or I can stretch it around to hold it open when I have the front cover folded back. It works very similar to the Amazon lighted cover, which has the elastic strap. These little headbands come in a multitude of colors, so it's pretty easy to find one that matches.

So, my preference is a magnetic snap closure that snaps on the front, but I have covers with the elastic band, and have one with a magnetic snap closure that snaps on the back.

ETA: I just realized you might be talking about sleeves instead of book style cases. Sorry!
