Ubuntu is easy to play around with and a *fairly* easy transition from Windows. Download a copy. Burn on to a CD or USB drive (instructions for both on the linked page). The image is bootable live drive (no need to install) and installation is pretty much a no-brainer. And there's more than enough technical help here on MR.
