I used to build my own (and my family's) computer from scratch. At the moment I can't be bothered. After my trip to the UK I'm going to save up for a new desktop PC, I have the computer store put it together but I'm installing Windows myself (only because they automatically partition the HDD into two and I don't want that).
With software I'm adequate. I'm not messing about in the registry but I'm usually able to solve problems. It's the same as with the hardware; I used to have to patience to fiddle with everything to get it working the way I want to but I can't be bothered at the moment.
On the other hand, I can put together fuse boxes, install wall sockets, switches and dimmers. But that's because we sell them and I have to be able to explain to people how they have to install them (even if they don't believe me).
