Sure you can. Tags would be one way, Series another, or if you don't have a use for one of the other fields you could co-opt it for your own purposes. For example, you could use the Rating field and that way keep track of up to 6 versions of the same book. I.e. the retail version is rated 0, your first edit is rated 1, your second edit is rated 2, etc.

That's odd. I think you must be looking in the wrong directory. If I look in my "Calibre Library" directory, I see multiple directories named after authors. Then in each author directory there's another list of directories, each one named with the title of a book. And inside each of those there's the book itself, plus a metadata.opf file as well as the cover image.

I hear you on this one, and if you're not happy with the Author/Title sort described above, then yeah, I guess Calibre isn't for you. And I fully understand that, I hate how my iPod won't let me browse by directory either, which is why I installed Rockbox on it, which allows for both database browsing like an iPod, as well as directory structure browsing.
