I definitely recognize this; I get a whole lot more entertainment per buck when I buy 20 used books at 50 cent each than out of one 10 buck agency book. Even if 80% of those 20 used books turn out to be bad/boring etc.
The only hard-covers I've read the last couple of years have been presents by my wife, who know which writers I like and read and quite correctly assumes I won't have read books that are available in hard-cover only
