Given how many planets we've found lately, and how little time (relative to the size of the task) we've spent looking for them, I'd say it's a dead certainty that there's some life out there.
As far as intelligence goes, I think the only kind of intelligence worth thinking about is the kind that's able to send messages through space. No other intelligence is going to do us any good, barring FTL travel, really. I would expect such intelligence to be rare, but in a universe as large as ours, "rare" might mean that 10,000 planets exist that could communicate with us in our galaxy.
