I checked the first couple of books of the Percy Jackson series and the Pendragon series, they're both good, but don't go in expecting it to be the next Potter (I loved the Potter series too). I've heard really great things about the Tiffany Aching series by Pratchett, that's next on my list to read, so they might interest you. It's set in the Discworld universe, but is self-contained, so they can be read outside his Discworld series.
