OK.. after going to version 7.5.6 last evening all is working. Placed pics (from within Caibre) are now showing in iBooks/iPad, even from the "save to disk" file.

I know you all think me crazy. I'm going to load up 7.5.5 again and see what happens...

Sometimes I think I'm losing my mind...
