Hi Annette, welcome to MobileRead. Sorry to hear of your troubles -- how annoying to be ready to try a new device and not have it work.

Some points from Sharper image literati will not turn on....

Are you sure it was charged log enough? Instructions call for at least 6 hour charge the first time. Press power button. After about a 10 sec delay with a blank screen, the main menu should come up.
Make sure power switch is on while charging. (??)
Try resetting with a paperclip.
