The registry entries are irrelevant- Calibre, due to its multi-OS scope, doesn't save anything in the registry, but rather in its configuration directory.

Thank you for your feedback. Like I said - it was just a try. The config directory is the one inside my user directory. Deleting it forced calibre to run the configuration wizard, but after that the error messages returned.
I just discovered, that the problem might be related to my connected kindle. At the moment I reinstalled calibre 0.7.56 with a fresh cofig directory. After rebooting my system it worked as expected. After closing calibre connecting my kindle and restarting it, it crashes with the "AttributeError: 'QWidget' object has no attribute 'filler'" error message. Disconnecting the kindle and restarting calibre gives the same error message, but windows doesn't terminate the process. I can use calibre normally, just that resizing the user interface has no effect (well, the window resizes, but not the content). Connecting the kindle while calibre is already running causes a crash too.
I'll try if changing some windows compatiliby settings might help. But I'm not too optimistic, as calibre used to run very well on my system for a long time. However, I'll report when I find out something new.
