I have bought five Sony e-Readers : one PRS-500, and four PRS-300 - for me, son, husband and a girlfriend. Two of the four PRS-300's were refurb, and they are both doing fine more than a year later, although my husband doesn't use his a lot - mostly just on trips for him. The two refurbs we got were indistinguishable from new, other than being marked as refurb - not even any cosmetic scratches.

Just two data points, and of course, YMMV.
