I've been thinking about the issues you raised because the more I think about it the more I like using the custom column. It's just so simple to use, no worrying about tags which have already been populated when I've downloaded metadata. Just enter the collection name into the custom column.
Because I've got collection names with commas "authorLastName, author FirstName" I had to indicate the colum was a text field and not comma delimited. This restricts me to having one collection name in the custom column.
What if I had something like "authorLastName/authorFirstName" or an underscore or a dash in place of the slash? Then I could have more than one collection name in the custom column and I would change to column back to comma delimited. Would that work?
BTW, can I change the format of a custom column or do I have to delete it and re-add it with the new format?
Another issue I've got is I've got a bunch of books on the kindle which I've never brought into calibre. If I want your plug-in to manage collections for them, which I do, I've got to bring them into calibre. I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
