I am aware that once I give a converted ebook to anyone else, what happens to it then is out of my hands. I would like to be sure that there isn't some hidden metadata remaining within a converted ebook that would allow Amazon to identify me as the original purchaser if one of my ebooks ends up on a news group or torrent site. I will certainly ask my friends not to do this, but I can't guarantee that it won't happen. Can anyone tell me if I could be identified from something within an un-drm'd, converted file?

Well, yes, that's a good one. You may consider regular postings in the joke-of-the-day-section.
Apart from that, as far as I understood the buyer information is not removed when stripping. Why should it. The stripping plugins were created for personal use only, not for law breaking purposes.

I got off to a pretty bad start, when one of the earlier posts from Poppaea suggested that I might "consider regular postings in the joke-of-the-day-section". If that's not personal abuse or ridicule, I don't know what is. So, against my better judgement I decided to join in in a similar vein. Bad mistake!
My apologies to anyone who has been offended by any of my comments.

Personal abuse?
There is an enormous amount of irony in your post that you obviously can't see. And I think it is funny when someone who wants to do what he was asked
not to do by the law and by the vendors business conditions wonders if others will abide when asked to do what he asks of them.
If I were in your shoes I'd would make me laugh about myself to be pointed to the irony of it.
When we go straigth down to it, you were asking if you who wants to steal something (which the DRM-stripping and distribution of copyrighted books is) and wonder if your fellow thieves are honest...
You know what? I think it was quite nice of me to make fun out of it.
