If all of the following are true:
- the metadata.calibre file was deleted
- you have cleared the "Read metadata from files on device" checkbox on the kindle plugin
- one of the fields {authors} or {title} is not in your save template, perhaps because a custom column is used instead.
then calibre will be unable to do any book matching when the device is plugged in. On-device will never be right.

To fix, you can check the 'Read metadata' box and plug in your kindle. Calibre will repopulate the metadata.calibre file from the metadata inside the books. This can take a *long time*, and will not result in happiness if the title/author in the book differ from those in the calibre library.

Alternatively you can resend the books.

Alternatively (again) you can restore metadata.calibre from a backup, should you have one.
Thanks, I have two of the problem areas, so I will check the "read metadata" box and try to rebuild it, hopefully I will not cause any sadness since I used Calibre send all the books to the k2. If all else fails, I will remove the books and then resend them, but that is a last resort because I do not want to leave it plugged up all day for it to rebuild the search indexes. I do have a send to device template that does not include the author but I do not want to change that, which is {tags:re((.*?)(\,|$).*,\1)}/{series} {series_index:0>2s} - {title}. I will let you know the results.

EDIT: turning on the read metadata box allowed it to rebuild but it only recognized 262 of the 782 books on the device, guess I am going to have to re-send.
