The metadata.calibre file on your kindle needs to be rebuilt. This is normally an automatic process, but there are ways to defeat it.

If all of the following are true:
- the metadata.calibre file was deleted
- you have cleared the "Read metadata from files on device" checkbox on the kindle plugin
- one of the fields {authors} or {title} is not in your save template, perhaps because a custom column is used instead.
then calibre will be unable to do any book matching when the device is plugged in. On-device will never be right.

To fix, you can check the 'Read metadata' box and plug in your kindle. Calibre will repopulate the metadata.calibre file from the metadata inside the books. This can take a *long time*, and will not result in happiness if the title/author in the book differ from those in the calibre library.

Alternatively you can resend the books.

Alternatively (again) you can restore metadata.calibre from a backup, should you have one.
