I modified my older Nooks to deal with the cracking issue, but even with that, there is no question. I would take the old version because of the ease of rooting. If you are able to root the new one, then there is no real reason to go either way.

Without rooting, for me, the Nook is worthless. It cannot handle large numbers of sideloaded books without screwing up and it has a lousy shelf system and it has a terrible system for searching and sorting.
